Our Deep Stretch sessions are slow-paced, deeply calming, and therapeutic classes designed to target the body’s connective tissues, specifically the fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Unlike active fitness or dynamic flow classes that focus on contracting muscles to build heat and power, Deep Stretch focuses entirely on the art of letting go.
This class utilizes gravity and long, mindful holds—typically ranging from two to five minutes per posture—to safely unravel deep-seated physical tightness. To make these extended holds accessible and effective, we use an array of supportive studio props, including supportive bolsters, soft blankets, yoga blocks, and straps. By completely supporting the body with props, we remove the need for muscular effort. This signals your nervous system that it is safe to drop its defensive guard, shifting you out of a stressful "fight-or-flight" state and into a healing "rest-and-digest" state.
At Willow Flow Studio, our small group sizes allow our certified instructors to provide individualized attention. We help you place your props perfectly, ensuring your body can melt safely into each shape without straining, pinching, or forcing.
Slowing down to deeply stretch your body provides profound physiological and mental rewards that high-intensity workouts simply cannot replicate.
Elasticity and Hydration of the Fascial Network
Fascia is the continuous web of connective tissue that wraps around every muscle, bone, and organ in your body. When you experience stress, repetitive movement, or dehydration, your fascia becomes thick, sticky, and rigid, making you feel tight and restricted. Long, passive holds gently stress and pull this tissue. This action stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid, which rehydrates your fascia, restores its natural elasticity, and makes your body feel incredibly fluid.
Increased Range of Motion and Joint Longevity
As we age, our joints naturally lose their lubricating fluids, and our joint capsules tighten. Deep Stretch targets these deep connective structures safely. By gently applying traction to the joints over extended periods, you encourage the flow of synovial fluid. This keeps your joints lubricated, supple, and healthy, while structurally expanding your overall range of motion.
Postural Correction and Relief from Aches
Chronic tension in large muscle groups—like the hamstrings, hip flexors, and spinal erectors—pulls your bones out of alignment. This physical imbalance causes chronic lower back aches, tight shoulders, and neck stiffness. Deep Stretch systematically releases these major tension centers, helping your skeletal system return naturally to its upright, effortless posture.
Mental Decompression and Stress Reduction
Your mind and body are completely interconnected; physical tension often mirrors mental stress. Because this class demands that you stay still and focus deeply on your breath during long holds, it acts as a form of moving meditation. This practice lowers your heart rate, reduces cortisol (stress hormone) levels, and helps quiet an overactive mind, paving the way for significantly better sleep quality.
This subpage welcomes absolutely everyone. It is not an advanced flexibility class; rather, it is a masterclass in restoring balance to a tired, stressed, or over-worked body.
Highly Active Individuals and Athletes
If you lift weights, run, cycle, or do high-intensity interval training (HIIT), your muscles are constantly contracting. Without a dedicated recovery practice, your muscle fibers stay shortened, which increases your risk of pulling a muscle or damaging a joint. Deep Stretch provides the ultimate active recovery, lengthening your muscle fibers and clearing metabolic waste to accelerate your athletic recovery time.
Stiff and Sedentary Professionals
Spending long hours sitting at a desk or driving compresses your spine and tightens your hips. If your body feels "stuck" or you feel like you have the flexibility of a wooden board, this class is tailored precisely for you. It safely reverses the physical restrictions caused by a modern, sedentary lifestyle.
Anyone Managing Chronic Stress or Burnout
If you feel constantly overwhelmed, exhausted, or have trouble switching off your brain at the end of the day, this class provides a safe, quiet sanctuary. The emphasis on deep, slow breathing and passive physical support helps calm an overloaded nervous system, helping you transition out of chronic stress.
Active Seniors Looking to Maintain Mobility
Maintaining independent mobility and protecting joint health is vital as the body matures. Because this class avoids rapid transitions, heavy balancing, or high-impact stress, it offers a beautifully safe and gentle environment for older adults to keep their bodies moving smoothly and comfortably.
If you cannot touch your toes or if the thought of staying still for a few minutes makes you feel restless, please do not worry. This class is designed to meet your body exactly where it is today. Here is how to prepare for your first relaxing session at Willow Flow Studio.
What to Wear
Warm, Comfortable Layers: Wear loose, stretchy, or soft clothing that allows you to move easily. Because this class is slow-paced and passive, your body temperature will naturally drop during the long holds. We highly recommend wearing layers, such as a cozy long-sleeve sweatshirt and a pair of socks, to keep yourself perfectly warm and comfortable.
Avoid Bulky Hardware: Opt for clothing without hard metal zippers, buttons, or restrictive underwires that could press uncomfortably into your skin when you relax onto your props.
Arrive Early
Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes before class begins. Walking into a relaxation class late can disrupt your focus and the calm environment for others. Arriving early gives you plenty of time to check in, clear your mind, and gather your props.
The Rule of "Safe Discomfort"
During a Deep Stretch class, your instructor will guide you into a pose and help you set up your props. The goal is never to stretch at your maximum 100% capacity. Instead, look for an edge that feels like a 50% or 60% effort—a gentle, dull sensation of a stretch where your muscles do not feel the need to tense up or fight back. If you find yourself gripping your mat, clenching your jaw, or holding your breath, you have gone too far. Simply back out slightly, or raise your hand so your instructor can add an extra prop to support you.
Do I need to be flexible to do this class?
No, absolutely not! This is one of the most common misconceptions. You do not need to be flexible to start; you practice Deep Stretch to build and maintain flexibility. Our studio props are specifically used to bridge the gap between your body and the floor, ensuring you get a safe, effective stretch regardless of your current flexibility.
How is this different from a standard dynamic yoga class?
A standard dynamic class (like Vinyasa or Flow) focuses on building heat, muscular strength, and cardiovascular endurance by moving fluidly from one pose to the next. Deep Stretch is completely static and passive. You stay close to the floor, hold poses for several minutes, and use props to completely relax your muscles so you can target your deep connective tissues instead.
Can I do this class if I am currently sore from a workout?
Yes! This class is the perfect antidote to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). It increases blood circulation to your tired muscles, which helps deliver fresh oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissues, accelerating your body's natural healing process.
How often should I attend to feel less tight?
For noticeable improvements in your physical flexibility and mental stress levels, we recommend attending 1 to 2 times per week. Many clients experience an immediate sense of spaciousness, physical relief, and mental clarity after their very first session.
What should I do if my limbs fall asleep during a long hold?
Because we hold poses for a few minutes, a prop can occasionally press gently against a superficial nerve, causing a mild "pins and needles" sensation. If this happens, you do not need to sit through it. Gently and slowly move out of the pose, adjust your position to restore normal circulation, and let your instructor know so they can give you a better prop setup.
Do not wait for your body to scream in pain before you give it the rest it deserves. At Willow Flow Studio, our quiet, supportive Deep Stretch classes offer your mind and body a necessary break from the fast pace of daily life. Let our props carry your weight, let your breath guide your release, and rediscover how amazing it feels to move with total ease and freedom.
